FLUTICASONE - NASAL SPRAY COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Flonase USES FOR FLONASE: This medication is a corticosteroid that works directly on the nasal passages to reduce swelling and inflammation. Fluticasone is used to relieve seasonal and year-round, allergic and non-allergic nasal symptoms such as itching, runny or stuffy nose, postnasal drip and sneezing in adults and children 4 years of age and older.
HOW TO USE FLONASE: Read the Patient Information Leaflet which contains instructions for proper use of this medication. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions. Gently blow your nose before using this drug. Shake the container gently before each use. Follow the instructions on how to properly prime the bottle if you are using it for the first time or if you have not used it for a week or more. Use this medication usually once or twice a day as directed by your doctor. Do not use more than 2 sprays in each nostril daily as this may increase the risk of side effects. Avoid spraying this medication in your eyes. Follow the detailed instructions for using the spray and cleaning the applicator. Use this medicine regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. Remember to use it at the same time(s) each day. Keep track of the number of sprays used from each container. Discard the container after you have used the number of sprays specified on the manufacturer's package. This medication does not work immediately. It may take several days before the full benefit of this drug is seen. Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.
SIDE EFFECTS OF FLONASE: Nasal dryness or irritation, nausea, vomiting, wheezing, or cough may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. Although unlikely, long-term use of nasal corticosteroids may cause fungal infections of the nose or throat. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop any of the following: fever, nasal pain, severe sore throat, pain when swallowing, white patches on the back of the throat. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: severe nosebleeds or nasal pain. A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING FLONASE: Before using fluticasone, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, or if you have any other allergies. This medication should not be used if you have certain medical conditions. Before using this medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have: recent nasal ulcers/trauma/surgery. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: tuberculosis, untreated or active infections, herpes infection of the eye, decreased adrenal gland function, eye disease (glaucoma). Avoid exposure to chickenpox or measles infection while using this medication. If you are exposed to these infections, seek immediate medical attention. Though very unlikely, it is possible this medication will be absorbed into your bloodstream. This may have undesirable consequences that may require additional corticosteroid treatment. This is especially true for children and for those who have used this drug for an extended period of time and if they also have serious medical problems such as serious infections, injuries, or surgeries. This precaution applies for up to one year after stopping use of this drug. Tell your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur: vision problems, persistent headache, increased thirst or urination, unusual weakness or weight loss, dizziness. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more details, and inform them that you use (or have used) this medication. Caution is advised when using this drug in children. Though it is unlikely to occur with nasal corticosteroids (fluticasone), this medication may temporarily slow down a child's rate of growth, but it will probably not affect final adult height. Monitor your child's height periodically. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known whether this drug passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS WHEN USING FLONASE: Your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware of any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first. Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: other forms of corticosteroids (e.g., oral prednisone, inhaled triamcinolone), drugs affecting the removal of fluticasone from your system (potent CYP 3A4 inhibitors such as ketoconazole, ritonavir).
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. US residents can call the US national poison hotline at 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents should call their local poison control center directly.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
